Understanding why, and guidance on how…
What do we mean by ‘Complex Password’?
A complex password is a strong and unique password usually made up of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and where allowed symbols. A complex password should not include any name or recognizable word, essentially making it gibberish.
Why do I need to use one?
Weak passwords can easily be broken by computer hackers using specialist software. A complex password helps prevent unauthorized access, protect sensitive date and reduce identity theft. Passwords are the first line if defense for your accounts and systems.
What else should I know?
- Email passwords are valuable to hackers as they can be a gateway to other accounts
- Ensuring all passwords are unique, never used for more than 1 account, is best practice
- Even though you think nobody will guess your dogs name, specialist software will!
- Never write down your password
- Don’t share passwords with anyone else
- Use a password manager. We can recommend and demonstrate depending on your system – but remember that your passwords manager access would be incredibly valuable
- It’s good practice to change main passwords often, such as those used for email or network access
